Here we are eyeball to eyeball with the European hornet Vespa crabro a unmistakeable creature. This was in the long border at RHS Wisley, munching on a a honey bee. This is very useful given that honey bees are becoming greater in number due to the trend of having hives in the UK. This hornet is magnificent and is rarely found to cause harm to people. Moving amongst flowers and plants they also aid pollination and predate on other insects. These are a key species and their nests must never be destructed by a misplaced firrational fear by humans.
Pauline photographs them and then later sits and enjoys painting from those pictures. Creating wonderful works of art which showcase horticulture and entomology.
